This unit had been installed during initial construction of the building. Major service was only possible if an access hole was cut into the building…43 stories above street level. Steinmetz was brought in to avoid this. 
Our solution was to design and manufacture a new main shaft that could be installed in sections while maintaining structural integrity. The old shaft was removed by cutting 4’ sections as it was pulled from the housing. Second picture shows that operation in process.
